1.    THE SPIRIT OF ‘I KNOW IT ALL’

Many first-year students get is wrong from the start with the know it all attitude. They claim to know it all and are usually too proud to ask questions. But they forget that “WHO NO GO, NO KNOW”. Be humble and let others carry you along.

2.  NO GUIDANCE AT ALL!

Lack of proper guidance has caused the downfall of so many 100 level students. Right from your resumption date, to your clearance, documentation, registrations, fees payment, reading, exam preparation and result you must be properly guided so you can avoid costly mistakes.

3.TRYING TO PLEASING EVERYONE YOU MEET.

One of the mistakes university students make in their first year is trying to please everyone and avoid being the outcast. Remember that you came to the university alone and you will leave alone.

Know yourself and know your interest. Do things that please you rather than doing things to hurt yourself all because you want to please others.

4.SKIPPING CLASSES EVERYTIME FOR NO GOOD REASON

Also, 100level students usually brainwash themselves that classes in 100level are not important and that all you need to do is to read. Classes are important in

  • developing the habit of going to classes in your first year will help you and carry you on till your final year
  • Also, many lecturers give exam tips in the classroom.
  • In class, you meet new people and friends that will be of benefits to you later on campus.

University is a world of distractions. But never let those secondary activities make you lose focus on your primary aim in school. Enjoy the life but don’t be lost in it. You do not need excess of social activities, partying, excess religious activities because they can become forms of distractions. Manage your time and set your priorities right.

6.STAYING OFF-CAMPUS IMMEDIATELY 

It is usually not advisable for a first-year student to start school by living off-campus. Going off-campus in your second year is better. Staying on campus in your 100 level is beneficial because of proximity to class, fewer distractions, more security and motivation to study.

7. LATE PREPARATION FOR EXAMS

University is not a secondary school. If you do not read hard, you will fail hard. Make reading a habit and not a ritual few days to exam. Most first-year students are fund of having late preparations for exams and it produces bad grades which can be detrimental to you from your first year to your final year.
