Education in Solomon Islands

Education in the Solomon Islands consists of six years of primary education and seven years of secondary education. Afterward, students who wish to complete a higher education within the Solomon Islands must attend one of three colleges in the country
Education is not compulsory, and many schools charge fees. In 1976, the government began substantial aid to primary as well as secondary schools. Christian missions (mainly Anglican), supported by government grants, continue to provide some primary schooling. In 1994 there were 60,493 students and 2,514 teachers at the primary school level. Student-to-teacher ratio stood at 24 to 1. Secondary schools (general) had 7,811 pupils and approximately 400 teachers in 1994. Higher education is provided by the Solomon Islands Teachers College (Honiara), the Honiara Technical Institute, and the University of the South Pacific Solomon Islands Center, also in Honiara.
